What to Expect on a Sunday Morning

We are a welcoming community that is open to many different paths toward the free and responsible search for truth and meaning. We are also a non-creedal, non-doctrinal congregation, which means that there are no required creeds or beliefs to attend or join. We often say “come as you are.” Dress is casual and informal.

Children are welcome in the services. If needed, we also offer a "Rocking Room" at the back of the sanctuary. And childcare is available on Sunday mornings starting at 9:45am. We also offer comprehensive childcare for all of our official programs held in our building, but if you need childcare for a program or event other than Sunday morning, please contact our Director of Religious Education, Lora Powell-Haney, at least 72 hours beforehand at ;

Our Order of Service on Sunday morning is usually similar to the following:

  • Welcome (“Hearing Enhancement Aids” and large print Orders of Service are available from the ushers)
  • Introit - an opening song
  • Chalice Lighting - a flaming chalice is the official symbol of the Unitarian Universalist Association
  • Opening Hymn
  • Story for All Ages - after the story, our young people go to Religious Education
  • Sharing of Joys and Sorrows - Anyone who feels led to do so, may come forward, say your name, and share something personal that is heavy or light on your heart. You may also light a candle to mark your release of this joy or concern into the support of the gathered community
  • Hymn
  • Meditation - we typically hear a short reading, followed by approximately one minute of reflective silence, then a musical meditation
  • Sermon - approximately 20 minutes
  • Hymn
  • The Sharing and Receiving of Gifts - we collect an offering, but you are under no obligation to contribute
  • Chalice Extinguishing
  • Benediction - closing words

If you plan to attend one of our Sunday morning services, we encourage you to stay afterward for "Conversation and Coffee" in the atrium, which is immediately behind the sanctuary. The word "worship" comes from the Old English word weorthscipe or "worth-ship" meaning "things of worth." We gather on Sunday mornings to consider and to celebrate things of worth.
